Being comparatively light on resources makes it attractive for administrators to host (Friendica's servers are called \"nodes\"). The community is good-natured and helpful. ---
This article is a stub. You can help the Fediverse wiki by expanding it. Anyone welcome to contribute.
It may be a question-answer format covering basic things, like:
- what federated social networks mean
- where to register
- tips for choosing a server. May be different for each network: in diaspora one might pay attention to whether a pod uses Camo proxy or not, if it uses the relay, whether it has a Tor .onion address; in Mastodon one can choose an instance by theme, by number of other instances it's connected to... etc. In any network important factors for choosing a pod are pod uptime and time being online. Most of these things are reflected in different server lists.
...May be better link to one of already existing FAQs out there instead of writing a new one. Needs discussion.

---
New minor version of diaspora* released. It features improvements of poll federation, supporting more languages, posts cross-posted to Facebook will always include a link to the original post on diaspora*, emails sent by diaspora now include a link to the pod in the footer. Some technical improvements to most requested account migration feature landed in this diaspora* version. Work on it continues, the delivery of the complete migration feature is expected in the next major version.
Read the official team [announcement](https://pod.diaspora.software/posts/1877755).
You'll find full changelog [here](https://github.com/diaspora/diaspora/releases/tag/v0.7.6.0).
As a bonus, diaspora* community members Gibberish.org have created an XMPP [chat room](https://social.gibberfish.org/uploads/images/scaled_full_171c312e714793593ad2.png) for newcomers to the Federation to talk, ask questions, and get to know one another. Join it if you have questions about diaspora* or are looking for people to connect with.

Hypolite Petovan, Friendica developer, [wrote a summary](https://blog.mrpetovan.com/web-development/encrypting-private-data-in-a-social-network-web-app) of what it would take to make private data in Fediverse macroblogging networks truely private. He uses Friendica network as a reference, but this applies to all Fediverse networks that have direct ("private") messages.

### Dull figures
The 2018 [report](https://fediverse.network/reports/2018) reveals that the world of federating networks has greatly expanded. The first three months on 2019 have seen about 450 new servers - hopefully, some of them will stay online (and updated). New accounts are being created and, apparenty, people remember about their old accounts, as the number of active users on most Fediverse networks increases weekly. If you wish to research figures, keep an eye on stats hubs from [this list](https://gitlab.com/fediverse/fediverse.gitlab.io/wikis/instance-monitoring-sites). You can also subscribe to [Federation stats bot](https://socialhome.network/u/thefederation) via any diaspora protocol platform ([diaspora](https://diaspora.software), [Friendica](https://friendi.ca), [Hubzilla](https://project.hubzilla.org), [Socialhome](https://socialhome.network) or [GangGo](https://git.feneas.org/ganggo/ganggo)). Provided numbers are an approximation, and some projects are misrepresented: Friendica, Hubzilla server numbers, GNU Social account numbers stand higher than metrics show. This is due to technical issues (mainly with [NodeInfo](https://github.com/jhass/nodeinfo) / [NodeInfo2](https://git.feneas.org/jaywink/nodeinfo2)). The good news is Fediverse keeps growing.
